Really moving. So glad you wrote and shared it.

I hope I can encourage my kids as your dad did for you. At the same time I think I'll call my own dad and thank him for encouraging me. Thanks.

My pleasure Benjamin. Pass it along if anyone you know might benefit from it.

I forwarded this piece (with liquid emanating from my ocular sockets) to my nephew-in-law, who knew and loved your father. I found that out AFTER his funeral in Salem.

Love ya, Dave. Thanks for the love and for spreading it around. And thanks, for then and forever, for translating the funeral live for my step mom. That remains one of the greatest gifts anyone ever gave me: making my words immediately intelligible to a woman we loved through the language barrier. My Spanish is insufficient. Were it sufficient, hopping back and forth would still be difficult in an already impossible eulogy.

Just got a quick response from my nephew. I had told him that I was unaware of the degree of tension your relationship to your father presented. His response to me, "Me either. Hook never spoke ill of his family."

Yeah, he was really good about not gossiping or talking about it, both ways. But I think it's good to show the history of it both to show how much he changed for the better and also how he showed up for us. It's not the only piece of the story: by the time your nephew met him, we'd moved past all of that, I think.

I hope to have a cowritten book out in the next couple of years as a sequel to Bell Hammers, written with the help of his journals.

Did you get any kind of a response from JB Pritzker? Did you even send the open letter to him to a place where he MIGHT have had the opportunity to read it?

I tagged him directly on one platform and had it sent to some politicians. Unsure if anything will come out of it, but it didn't matter either way because the ultimate goal — motivating the community online and in person — worked. I can say that the FEMA funding was sent to Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky, but not Illinois last I checked. Make of that demographic cross section what you will...

We are living a super-strange political moment. I spend most every day SMH. Also, inexplicably, I find absolutely no buyers' remorse among my former colleagues (or extended family members).
