Something unmentioned here (maybe) is resonance. Structure, especially rhyming, is an aid to recall, and this is important in oral tradition or simply embedding the poetry in the noggin. I tried to get to this in my (here comes the horn toot) recent short post: https://open.substack.com/pub/undergrowth/p/on-the-struggle-of-a-poetry-grump?r=14br2&utm_medium=ios

I think that's true, certainly, but wouldn't that fall under "matter" — as in "the matter under discussion today is our collective memory. The means by which we will remember is the following meter..." etc. ?

Certainly some of these were improv forms, indiscernible in many ways from our modern beat poets.

Acceptance

Who was I the fool to think?

'Tis me the World rejects!

In my craving for acknowledgement,

I reject the mirror of my kin,

And isolate myself,

In the name of selfish vanity.

Hi Lance - To me poetry is saying something in a cryptic language that has more meaning than prose. Cheers, Crabbers

Definitely. Thanks Barry — I agree it's a useful tool. How's your own writing coming along? Did you ever do anything with that story you shared at the open mic?

Oh you have to send that to me, Barry. I love your work so much.

So grateful for you reading the novel and getting it, getting the point, getting the humor.

Is that where you're based?
